SPOTR stands for Sights & Panoramas Observed Traveling Roads, referencing the spotting scopes used by wildlife watchers. Pullouts are designated places where you may pull off the road. Panoramas depict what wildlife watchers see using their spotting scopes. Sights are physical features visible from pullouts or on maps, ranging from large areas like mountains and meadows to single objects such as trees or rocks. Many sight names were coined by wildlife watchers to indicate wildlife locations. Some names used in this app are unofficial and not displayed on approved National Park Service maps.

You can select any section on the Yellowstone National Park map and view the related maps in the app. The "Spot Me" function displays the current location on the app's maps. From the map section, you can pick a pullout or search for one by name. Upon choosing a pullout, the app provides details including panoramas showcasing the sights there and latitude/longitude information. By selecting the spotting scope icon in the app bar, you can view digiscoped images of selected sights. Navigation from one pullout to another is also available. Some named pullouts marked as "Lat/Lon only" do not have associated photos.
In the pullout details section, tapping on the Yellowstone Wolves icon in the upper right corner displays a list of recent years of Yellowstone Wolves if installed. Users can select a year to see which wolf pack(s) might be spotted from that specific pullout during that year. Conversely, while viewing a wolf pack in a Yellowstone Wolves app, tapping the Yellowstone SPOTR icon in the app bar shows the pullouts where that wolf pack might be seen.
You can search for a sight by name and see from which pullouts it is visible. For example, searching for the Bear Meadow Sight will show several pullouts from which it can be observed. Upon selecting a pullout, you can swipe through its panoramas and move on to explore other pullouts. The USGS maps integrated into the app highlight areas where wildlife sightings are likely to occur; these features are called map sights and can also be searched by name. Some map sights are visible from pullouts leading to combined search results.
First-time users unfamiliar with the names of pullouts and sights are recommended to start with the Browse function. This feature allows users to explore pullouts, sights, and lists of latitudes/longitudes associated with the pullouts. Browsing through these functions provides users with valuable familiarity before utilizing the search function.
No Wi-Fi access is required to utilize this app.
